Two years ago, Karleen Wolanin faced every parent’s worst nightmare—she nearly lost her daughter to fentanyl. In the wake of that terrifying experience, she turned to her faith, joining a 21-day prayer initiative at her church. During that time, Karleen felt a powerful calling: something had to be done.
What began as a desperate, faith-filled prayer quickly transformed into purpose. Karleen started a small support group for parents navigating the painful realities of substance use and mental health challenges in their children—something she had personally faced for over 11 years. But it became clear that this group was only the beginning.
That support circle grew into something much larger—a movement. It laid the foundation for what is now Virginia Fentanyl and Substance Awareness (VFSA). Driven by her personal journey and a mission to ensure no parent feels alone, Karleen built VFSA to be a voice, a resource, and a source of hope for families across Virginia impacted by substance use and mental health struggles.
VFSA was born from heartbreak, but it now stands for healing, awareness, and the power of community-driven change.
First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin began Sisterhood Spotlight to showcase incredible women across the Commonwealth of Virginia to and highlighting their incredible stories and contributions to their communities.
